Since Chernobyl Heart aired on HBO last month, we have been flooded with email -- questions, ideas, offers of support. Thank you so much for that! In this newsletter, we will address some of your most frequent requests for information. |
||||
| 1. When can I see Chernobyl Heart again? 2. How can I help -- other than $$$? 3. How are the Chernobyl Heart film kids doing? 4. What is your connection to the United Nations? 5. How can I learn more -- about your programs, and about Chernobyl? If you have any other feedback or ideas for us, please respond to this email to let us know -- we'll look forward to hearing from you. |

| Many of you have made donations (thank you), and have asked us what else you can do to help. Here are
some ideas: * Supplies: Do you have contacts in the healthcare or medical supply industry? Let us know by replying to this mail -- we would appreciate your introduction. * Corporate/Workplace Sponsorships and Fundraising: Does your company have a giving program or a foundation? We can work with you to develop an appropriate program. See the Sponsors page of our website to see who is supporting us. * Learn More and Tell People: Some people are not in a postition to make a donation -- we've heard from many students, for example -- but you can really help us by spreading awareness. Learn about the Chernobyl disaster, and send your friends to our web page so they can learn more too. You can also link us to your personal or business webpage, and tell your associates why you support our work. * eBay Seller? If you are an eBay seller, you can direct a portion of sales of specific items to us. Click on GivingWorks on the eBay home page to learn more. |
| 3. How are the Chernobyl Heart kids doing? |
| Chernobyl Heart moved many of us by putting faces to a tragedy that we thought of as "in the
past." Here is a brief update on the Chernobyl Heart kids you asked about most.
The "roughly handled child"... Near the beginning of the film, a small child is seen handled in a rough way, as CCPI's Adi Roche pleads with the nurse to be gentle. We are sad to to report that this child died shortly after he was filmed. While we cannot say that CCPI -- or anyone -- might have been able to give this child a much longer life, we can certainly hold him out as an example of how badly needed is proper medical and nursing care in many institutions in Belarus. You can read more about our nursing programs on the Our Programs page of our website. |

The boy with the terrible skin condition on his hands and feet ... is named Sasha N.
Sasha, aged 13 when he was filmed (although he looks much younger), suffered terribly from severe malnutrition, and a
severely compromised immune system which complicated a rare, contageous skin condition called "Norwegian Encrusted
Scabies." We brought him to Tralee General Hospital in Ireland, where he was treated successfully, and was returned to
his home in the Vesnova asylum. His
health is closely monitored by our nurses, who are trained, supervised, and paid by CCPI. He is doing great.

The "Chernobyl Heart girl"... is named Tatyana M. We will never forget the gratitude of her parents, so movingly depicted near the end of the film, as she recovered from life-saving cardiac surgery. Tatyana spent this past summer in Ireland, staying with a host family through CCPI's Rest and Recuperation Program. As "star" of Chernobyl Heart, she received a hero's welcome. She has fully recovered from her surgery, and looks great! She has a slight scoliosis of the spine, which is supported by a brace. CCPI provides funding and logisitics for cardiac surgeon Dr. William Novick's life saving surgical trips to Belarus. If you would like to support this program, you can designate your donation by using the DONATE NOW button. |

The boy who asked for the TV and the boy who wants to be a doctor... Sasha and Sergei are well and, as we write, they are enjoying a holiday in Ireland with host families. You can read about our Rest and Recuperation on the Our Programs section of the web site. Since Chernobyl Heart was filmed two years ago, their home is quite a different place -- read about what is going on in Vesnova. |
| 4. What is your connection to the United Nations? CCPI is an official United Nations NGO. To learn more about what this means and our involvement, go to our website and click on Working with the United Nations. |
