Downs

Shape and movement are as important to me as color. My paintings are the way I see the world. Simply put, synthetic realism is to take reality as most people see it and reconfigure the structure until the real is made unreal. The intent is not to shock, but to allow the viewer to explore thoughts that turn imagination into reality.
 

About the artist

For the past ten years Downs has consistently produced rich, poetic paintings. His small, intimate and highly polished works are meticulously rendered in fine detail. The charm of his paintings is the simplicity in the rather mundane objects. 

Downs’ interest in art evolved from his fascination with art deco and the modernist movement of the 40’s. In the 8O's, after several years of exploring different forms of painting, elements of surrealism and pop art came together to create what has been labeled ‘synthetic realism’.
